Gender Based Violence

GLK recognizes that girls and women are most affected by GBV and therefore they are the core focus and priority in our work. We believe that primary prevention of violence against girls and women is critical.

Consequently, GLK will form a national GBV network with the following objectives:

Access To Education

Good schools are the starting point for economic growth, a healthy civil society and meaningful lives. GLK’s approach reduces the barriers children face as they try to enroll in school, attend class and complete their education. We will work with communities to ensure that classrooms are safe and that teachers have the training, experience and resources they need to provide a quality education. In addition, we are working on establishing an girls secondary school to be named Jumuiya Girls Centre

Girl Child Scholarship Fund

This program aims at providing a permanent approach to addressing the many challenges faced by the girl child in Kenya. It has grown out of the recognition that the girl child is in many cases not able to exploit her full potential as a person due to all kinds of cultural practices and believes, including their exploitation during the post elections violence that still prevail in many parts of Kenya. Some of them are being forced to undergo the Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Over ninety percent of the girls undergoing this painful experience get married immediately after this rite, thus contributing to many of them dropping out of school. We need to reverse this trend by targeting all categories of suffering.

Taking into account that this is an issue requiring long term concerted efforts, GLK has established an endowment component aimed at growing in perpetuity, funds to direct towards holistic girl child initiative, while also having an on-going grant making component which make funds available to initiatives that are focusing on curtailing this problem.
